Feature Games based on AREA Ratings at Start of Round:

  • Heavyweight Game: #12 Two players who have no business being in the 1-loss pool slug it out.
  • Lightweight Game: #30 The 1st vs the 6th lowest AREA in the field.
  • Most Unbalanced Game: #18 AREA delta = 1925. The 2nd lowest rating in the field takes on a former WBC and PBEM champion.
  • Most Evenly Matched Game: #4 AREA delta = 1 in a game with a total AREA = 12413. Wayne claims the record for tiniest upset normalized to rating.
  • Biggest Upset: Drew D (game #19) is the leader in the clubhouse overcoming an multi-laurelist in this tournament and an AREA delta of 1244. Three games with larger delta have yet to complete.

Game Notes:

#2: At 19 VP and holding Africa, Roy became so focused on preventing Paul’s threatened domination that he defended the position on AR7, and wound up holding the scoring card.

#9: A long awaited tournament pairing between close friends, close until suddenly not at the end.

#11: SU had 2x Decol + Destal in early war, then 17 VP from scoring cards on T4 (with OPEC for 4 still in hand).

#15: The Soviets flirted with victory at 18 VP in T5, and again with a near chance to play Wargames in T8, but things swung hard for the Americans in the end.

#25: SU forced to play D&C at DEFCON 2.

#27 and #32: Roderick was unexpectedly absent for the first 3 weeks of the round. After more than a week elapsed without contact, the GM paired Al O against and eliminator, Carl A, as it was unclear if Roderick would show up at all. When Roderick eventually reappeared, the GM paired him against the same eliminator.

#28: Forced play of Grain Sales.

#30: There were some difficulties in setting up the game and Steve ultimately decided to withdraw. No game result will be submitted to AREA and this match up does not effect the SU-US victory counts at the top of the webpage or Martin’s bid count.

#31: Reason for forfeit not determined.
